Closing out Strong! More Character Sheets Coming Your Way

The campaign is drawing to a close and still all of you continue to show your support. We've managed to surpass 70k, a crazy milestone, and with that we've also passed our next stretch goal! We'll be designing and producing a second set of arcanepunk-styled character sheets, and as always a huge thank you to everyone here who has backed so far and gotten us this far. We're stoked to add another physical product to the roster and get you all something to pull out at the table to bring some whimsy to your sessions.

Designing a character sheet is a funny process because you naturally revert to the layout of whatever sheet you're most used to. Efficiency is the name of the game in terms of character sheet layout, you want to be able to reference the stats and equipment as easily as possible. The important numbers (speed, of course) should be big or in the middle or both. But then the question becomes, how do you organize the rest? Do Skills get placed next to their corresponding ability? Are Skills lined up in frequency of use? Does equipment get a more vital spot than bonds/flaws/traits? Does anything need to be removed entirely, or added? All of these questions and more have to be answered, and that's just for the layout. But, much of the excitement of creating a new character sheet is the aesthetic not the layout and we are stoked to come up with a new artistic design. The first character sheet is centered on racing and flying, flags and blue skies, so we're considering making this second one more mechanically oriented. Bright chrome and firing pistons. But, we're not set on anything just yet, after all we did just get the funding to go for it! And once again, thank you for that. If you want to bat around ideas with us, hop on over to the Discord.

The next stretch goal, if we can reach it by some miracle, is another adventure. Adventure writing is my personal background, and having spent the better part of three years creating this world I want to play around with the stories inside of it, perhaps more than anyone else. There are already adventures included in the book, but the concept for this one includes sweeping, worldwide stakes that really get to the core of a lot of the most exciting parts of Guillman's Guide to Speed. Frankly, I'm just looking for an excuse to cram another plotline into the universe I've spent so long living in and I need your help to do it. 

We're into the final stretch of the campaign now. If you know anyone who has been on the fence, or waiting to see if some stretch goals will be met, now is the time to get in. This is the last time we'll ask you guys for help, because after this we get down to the dirty work of finishing everything up and getting it sent out. It's amazing that you've supported us to the level you have and with one more big push in these last two days it would be sensational to achieve one final stretch goal before everything wraps up. But regardless of how these final days go, we are so grateful to you and all the support you've shown us. Thank you for your time, interest and pledges. It's made our dreams real.

Legendary Racers and on to the Next!

It feels as though we're continually saying thank you for all the support, and we're not going to stop. This quest continues to get more and more exciting as we continue to hit stretch goals, the consistency with which everyone has come out for Guillman's Guide to Speed is exhilarating and we are so, so grateful. So once again, thank you so much.

Legendary Racers Stretch Goal Unlocked

As previously mentioned these stretch goals are a little bit mapped out and once unlocked it means we get to develop them fully for the book. For the Legendary Racers I have a couple of really fun ideas, not least of which is a sentient car which the Discord server suggested, and it will lend some depth to the races in the book by giving personality to the other creatures players will be up against. Every Mario needs a Bowser, after all. D&D is collective storytelling and being able to provide more characters with which to tell those stories is such a joy, it is perhaps what I enjoy most about creating content for the game, so once again we have to say a huge thank you for getting us past that point of development!

As much as we love developing new content for the book we also want to provide some top notch, usable physical products for you. This campaign in part has been based off of a genre we've taken to calling "arcanepunk", blending machine and magic in a bright, whimsical environment. To help immerse you in that feel and theme we would love to design more character sheets, resources that remind you what's important in all this: speed. In all seriousness there's so much more to this wonderful game than just the words on the page, and we want to help create a more complete feeling for when you have the chance to use our stuff, and being able to look down at the appropriate aesthetic every time you reference something on your character sheet helps so much with that. Plus it means getting more amazing work done by the fantastic Paul Brown, who you can (and should) find over at @paulbrownillustration on Instagram!

In summary, once again we are so grateful for making this dream of ours a reality, we are so excited to create the Legendary Racers, and we're keeping our fingers crossed for hitting the next stretch goal so we can bring you more character sheets!

🚗 Stretch Goal #2 Unlocked: Track Layouts 🚗

Track Layouts: Let's deepen immersion by putting you on the streets and in the skies where legendary races and battles take place. More full color battlemaps for you to use at your table to help speed up combat and stay in high gear.

We've zoomed past the 50k mark and unlocked our second stretch goal: Track Layouts. Your unwavering support has injected turbo power into our campaign, and we're racing ahead full throttle! 🏁🔥

The beauty of the Track Layouts is twofold because it allows us to expand on the central theme of speed and racing with some more physical products which gives us the freedom to hone in on the design of these racetrack battlemaps, and even more exciting is we can get more amazing map art done! We've been working with the fantastic Amy Hedt who you can find on Instagram, @sage.and.stone.cartography, and not only is she a joy to work with but her maps are beautiful.

Air Race Course

Being able to produce more track layout battlemaps also allows for some freedom for us to incorporate unique and invigorating designs. The thought process behind making battlemaps that are also track layouts is that the final product will serve two purposes, the first of course being that you can race on them directly and see who is leading and where everyone is in relation to one another, and the second use being that you can also use them as regular battlemaps. Fighting in the midst of city streets? You can use the Volsegrad City Street Circuit map. Sailing the high seas and trying to evade pirates? You can use the Shallow Shoals battlemap. And with the addition of more maps we can get wilder and wackier not only with our racetrack design, but with the situations that you might find your adventures in, making them even more specific and interesting. All in all we are super stoked to have the funding to create more track layout battlemaps, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

🏁 Next Stretch Goal: Legendary Racers at $60k

Legendary Racers: We're making new legendary enemies for you to take on! Whether in a battle of might, or a battle of speed these racers sure will make for great boss battles at your table.

But hold onto your seats, racers! 🏎️💨 The next pit stop? $60k - Legendary Racers. The next stretch goal is one that's near and dear as well. The Legendary Racers are an idea I had that would more thoroughly tie the lore of the world together, while providing potential BBEG-style creatures that could be used in any campaign. While Guillman is the most successful, famous racer in the world he didn't get there without beating a lot of very talented individuals, racers with their own special techniques and tactics they employ to take down the competition. These racers will (if we hit our next stretch goal) be perfect to use in the races themselves, being fast and cunning, while also wielding enough power to be flavorful enemies in any situation. Since each legendary racer will come with specialties and preferred races, mythological wins and secret insights, it will lend depth to both the mechanics and the lore. We are so excited and really hope we can continue to climb!

Our hearts are in overdrive with gratitude. The Only Crits team is beyond thrilled. Not only did we achieve our funding goal, but we also surpassed two stretch goals! 🚀 We can't wait to get down to work on all the new stuff and hopefully there's even more to come!

🚀 Stretch Goal #1 Unlocked: New Player Options 🎉

New Player Options: You get a subclass and you get a subclass and you get a subclass! Why stick with 12 subclasses when you can have 16 instead? And while we're at it we're also going to do 4 more ancestries so players can be whoever they want.

This journey has been an absolute whirlwind since we started. We passed our funding goal in under a day which turned this little dream into a reality, and now thanks to all your support and excitement we’ve managed to pass our first stretch goal as well. 🥳

The New Player Options are a stretch goal that I am very excited to deliver. When sitting down to write the book it’s always difficult to tell what people are going to be excited about, what content is worth including, heck before launching the campaign we weren’t even sure that people would like the whole concept. Currently the book has pages written and ideas that have been mapped out but this stretch goal means that we get to go back to designing, back to figuring out ideas and how to apply them to 5e. Having passed the first stretch goal I get to implement some of the ideas that up until now have just been floating around in the psychic demiplane in the back of my mind. It’s been one of my favorite parts of this process. The freedom, support even, to explore and refine ideas is nothing short of a dream come true and it is all thanks to you.

It’s also super exciting because it means we get to make the book longer and more fun for everyone, since the player options will be added directly to the book it’ll apply to everything from the PDF up. 📖✨ Not every stretch goal, if we manage to keep this amazing push going, will be content directly for the book. We want to be able to offer cool physical products and items that are useful for DnD in other ways, like battlemaps for instance, which is our next goal. But it’s such a great way to start being able to make the core of this whole campaign, the book, just that much longer and better. After all you’ve done to help us as we’ve progressed through this adventure, we can’t wait to be able to make Guillman’s Guide to Speed better and better.

In short, we are so, so grateful that you have supported us and backed us for our campaign, and we are even more excited to deliver something amazing to you.
